距離があるのは、同じ家の中
僕が距離を置きたいと言われるのは、遠く離れた場所ではなく、自分の家の中です。二人は同じ掛け布団の下で眠り、キスもしている。それでも、どうしてこんなに遠いのかと尋ねる。触れられる近さと、気持ちが届く近さが、ここでは分かれています。
サビの冷たさは、骨に届くほどのものとして歌われます。相手が息をするたびに何かを感じ取るほど近くにいながら、何が変わったかはつかめない。そのため、体に迫るほど強く感じることと、理由を説明できないことが、同じサビに並び続けます。
時間が必要なのか、もう終わりなのか
最初の質問は、時間をかけているのか、それとも休止中なのか、というものです。僕にとってつらいのは、答えがどちらか分からず、宙ぶらりんに置かれることです。相手が距離を求めても、その距離が戻るための時間なのか、離れるための始まりなのか、判断できません。
二番では、去りたいなら去ってほしいとまで言います。けれど相手は、言葉を飲み込み、沈黙する。「何にしがみついているの」という問いも、関係を続ける根拠がほしいという願いです。冷たさという一つの感覚の周りに、まだ言ってもらえない答えがいくつも残っています。
値段をつけられない相手を、お金の言葉で責める
Futureの節では、値札を外して、君を値段のつけられない存在にしたと歌います。その直後に、大金を使ったシャンデリアと、スイッチを切るように自分を断つ相手が並ぶ。与えたものの大きさを言葉にするほど、光を一瞬で切られるような、相手の変化が際立ちます。
さらに相手を金目当てだと責め、運転手に話を聞かせないため車を替えたとも言う。これは、相手の本心が分かったという答えではなく、傷ついた側からの不満が強くなる場面です。ラップの後も、なぜそんなに冷たいのかというサビは変わりません。多くを語れる僕にも、相手の沈黙の理由だけは分からないままです。
